Introduction to the New Hyundai G4KH Engine
The G4KH is a 2.0T GDI turbocharged engine developed by Hyundai-Kia Group. The updated model is the China National VI b specification, equipped with a GPF gasoline particulate filter. It is available in two tunes: a standard household version and an N high-performance version. It features an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head, inline-four DOHC 16-valve design, dual CVVT, and a twin-scroll turbo with GDI direct injection.
Major Upgrades of the New (National VI) Version
- GPF gasoline particulate filter added to the exhaust system. Revised after-treatment calibration, updated fuel injection strategy and enhanced OBD monitoring to meet National VI b emission rules.
- Optimized cooling circuit and oil gallery for improved stability under sustained high load.
- Improved timing system and VVT sprockets to reduce the common cold-start rattle issue found on earlier models.
- More conservative calibration for earlier low-end torque delivery, balancing fuel economy and emissions. Peak power is slightly lower than the old National V variant, yet it delivers smoother everyday driving.
Compatible Vehicles
Hyundai: 4th-generation Santa Fe (Traveler), Sonata LF, Elantra N, Kona N, Veloster N
Kia: K5, Sorento, KX7, Sportage 2.0T
Pros & Cons
✅ Advantages: Early low-end torque, reliable 8AT variant, decent tuning potential, widely available spare parts
⚠️ Limitations: Intake valves prone to carbon buildup due to GDI direct injection; GPF-equipped units cannot have exhaust modified freely. While improved, issues such as VVT sprocket pressure loss and EGR valve faults may still occur on older units. SP-grade engine oil is recommended, with regular carbon cleaning service.
Matched Transmissions
- Standard version: Hyundai 8AT (most reliable)
- N performance version: 6MT manual / 8-speed wet DCT
